Herniated Disc(s)

Disc herniation (or rupture) is one of the most common causes of back pain. When a disc herniates, the jelly-like substance in the center is pushed out, irritating nearby nerves.

Causes of herniated disc(s)

Most people experience a herniated disc as they age. The spine naturally starts to weaken and break down. Injuries are also a common cause of herniated discs, often making the pain worse and increasing the likelihood of rupture.

Common symptoms of herniated discs:

  • Irregular or continued back pain--sometimes coughing, sneezing, moving, or even standing up for a long time can worsen back pain caused by a ruptured disc

  • Sciatica

  • Foot or leg numbness

  • Poor reflexes in your ankle or knee

  • Spasms in your back muscles

  • Bowel or bladder problems

  • Leg muscle weakness

Symptoms of a herniated sic are similar to those of other conditions. It's important to see your doctor to get an accurate diagnosis.

Treatment

Most people make a full recovery with conservative treatments. If these treatments don't work, your doctor may recommend surgical treatment to remove your ruptured disc.

1 / Conservative treatment

Your primary care doctor may offer conservative treatment options to manage your pain and promote recovery. These options may include prescription medications, physical therapy, muscle relaxers,  cortisone injections, or other therapies (like massage therapy).

2 / Surgical treatment

Few people with herniated discs require surgery, but if your pain is severe and lasts longer than 6 weeks, your primary care doctor may recommend surgery, especially if you have numbness or weakness, trouble standing or walking, loss of bladder or bowel control.

There are several surgical options for repair of a herniated disc, but in most cases, your surgeon can remove the protruding part of the disc. Our specialists will help you decide which treatment option(s) will best meet your needs.

Prevention

Although herniated discs are primarily caused by aging, you can take steps to lower your likelihood of developing them :

  • Maintain good posture. Good posture when sitting, standing, sleeping, or lifting heavy objects can reduce pressure on your spine and discs.

  • Maintain a healthy weight. Alongside your primary care doctor, you can create a plan for eating and physical activity that allows you to reach and maintain a healthy weight for your body.

  • Quit using tobacco products (including vaping). Nicotine lowers the supply of blood to your bones, which can weaken your spine.

  • Stay active. Core strength and flexibility stabilize and support the spine.
